No More Blue M&M's?

This Halloween the blue M & M’s will be difficult to find. In response to growing pressure from consumers across the globe, MARS (the maker of M&M’s), announced in February that over the next five years it would remove artificial colors from the processed foods it makes for human consumption. Pigments found in natural substances would take their place. MARS has joined a growing list of global food manufacturers removing artificial dyes from some or all of their products. The companies include Nestle’ USA, General Mills, Kraft, Frito-Lay, Campbell’s, Kellogg’s and Mondelez International, the makers of Oreo’s, Tang and Sour Patch Kids.

The challenge for MARS is the color “blue”. Blue is a rarity among plants and animals. When blue does occur in nature it often is not truly blue but rather a trick of diffraction or the scattering of light; which is the case for bird feathers, sky, water and iridescent butterfly wings. A blueberry is actually more red than blue when you mash it.

The orange glow of Krafts revamped macaroni and cheese now comes from paprika, turmeric and annatto; a coloring extracted from tree seeds. General Mills experimented with 69 different natural dyes before it released a naturally colored Trix.

One would think that it would be relatively simple to find “blue”. In 2013 MARS began experimenting with the microscopic algae spirulina to make the first natural blue dye approved for use in the US. The problem is it is the incorrect blue, the color degrades and fades. So researchers are still looking everywhere for naturally occurring blue pigments. They have found a berry in Central & South America, the huito, a blue gardenia flower, red cabbage, aged red wine, a bacteria used to make swiss cheese, the Japanese Kusagiberry, butterfly pea-flowers and tree root fungi. All of that for the blue M & M. Let’s hope it tastes as good as the red ones.

Attn Peeps: Easter Candy To Avoid

Easter is a holiday surrounded by tons and tons of decorative candy that is hard to avoid. Like most holidays, when gathering with friends and family a common tradition for most is to indulge in food and desserts without being too cautious about what you’re consuming. For our patients that wear braces, we urge you to keep your eyes open (and mouths closed) to Easter candy that can be damaging to your braces.

Hinesly Orthodontics has taken the time to dig a little deeper into this for our patients. Keep reading to learn Easter candy totally unsuitable for our patients with braces.
  • Jelly Beans
  • Gummi Bears
  • Licorice
  • Starburst
  • Snickers
  • Life Savers
  • Ring Pops
  • Twix
  • Skittles
  • Sour Patch Kids
Today’s braces are very high tech. It’s important for you to be aware of what you, or your child, are eating this Easter to avoid from damaging braces, and dodge costly repairs. Keep an eye on items that will potentially be putting braces at risk for repairs.

It's Children's Dental Health Month

Did you know in the United States alone 51 million hours of school is missed by American students due to oral health problems?  That’s why it’s so important to emphasize the recognition of February being National Children's Dental Health national month, because every hour of school that is missed creates more problems for children in the classroom. This is why Hinesly Orthodontics encourages you to utilize this month to remind your kids about dental health.

Check out a couple of tips we wanted to share with you to make dental health creative when teaching your kids how to have healthy smiles!

Fun Toothbrushes

Another way to make dental health more interesting for children is to opt for fun style toothbrush. When replacing their toothbrush, let them pick one in their favorite color or with their favorite character. Also, a new toothbrush option that is growing pretty rapidly is the gaming toothbrush, such as the Grush. The “Grush” takes brushing to another level. This toothbrush is coupled with interactive and instructive mobile games guiding kids’ through proper brushing techniques while they think they are simply playing a game. These brushes also provide tracking for parents to see growth in results.

Create Memories

Show your children that taking care of their dental health is fun and memorable by adding a little flare to it. Brush and floss with them, sing songs, and help them brush while encouraging them to learn the proper skills. Also, there are several fun books and videos designed specifically for children to learn about dental health. Read to them and watch educational videos together. These efforts alone will provide great oral health habits with your children and long lasting memories.

Don't forget, according to the American Association of Orthodontists, the best age for children to be seen by an orthodontist for the first time is 7.  If you're child is ready for his or her first visit, bring them to Hinesly Orthodontics and let us assist you with treatment options.

Hinesly Orthodontic Before & After Photos

Some patients are apprehensive about beginning the process of braces, but with our care they quickly grow eager and excited to see their smile transform. Not only can braces improve oral health, but they also provide a cosmetically attractive smile too.

Below you will find some before & after photos of Hinesly Orthodontics patients. We want to showcase just a few of the numerous smiles we’ve had the pleasure or treating.

Case 1

The photos represent a young adolescent female with crowding of both upper and lower arches. She exhibited an anterior right and left crossbite. She was treated with full upper and lower braces. We were able to align her teeth without performing any extractions. Her overall treatment time was 24 months.

Case 2

There are crossbites involving the anterior and posterior teeth. The patient was treated in two phases.A palatal expander was utilized in the initial phase to make the upper jaw wider. The second phase involved upper and lower braces. Two upper and two lower bicuspids were extracted to create space for the alignment of the front teeth. Her overall treatment time was 28 months.

Case 3

The photos are of a teenage male with severe upper and lower crowding and protrusion of the front teeth. He was treated with full braces and the extraction of two upper and two lower bicuspids. The spaces created by the extractions were used to align and retract the front teeth. The total treatment time was 22 months.

Warning: Foods To Avoid

Braces are used as a treatment to bring out your best smile. And with that comes a lot of changes to your mouth including your daily oral hygiene activities and eating habits. While you have braces you will want to avoid certain types of foods. Basically stay away from anything sticky, chewy, hard and crunchy.

Here’s a list of treats you will need to avoid during your braces treatment.

  • Ice

Dairy - pudding, soft cheeses
Breads – sliced lunch bread, soft tortillas, pancakes, muffins w/o nuts, biscuits

Let's Celebrate Orthodontic Health Month

When you think October, you naturally think Halloween.
But did you know that October is also a time for celebrating Orthodontics?

Every year, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recognizes October as a time to raise awareness of the benefits of orthodontic treatment.

In a month full of sweet treats, it’s more important than ever to be mindful of your braces and/or your orthodontic appliances. As an alternative to the sugar filled Halloween treats we have a fun recipe provided by the AAO that you and your family will love.

Spooky Spider Web Bean Dip
(Makes 10-12 servings)

  • 2 cans black beans, drained
  • 1 large clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 big handful of cilantro leaves
  • ¼ cup full-fat sour cream
  • ½ a jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
  • Juice of half a lime
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • And additional ¼ cup sour cream for making the spider web topping

1. Place ingredients in the bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth.
2. Scoop bean dip into a round bowl.
3. In a small Ziploc bag, place the additional sour cream. Making sure it is all
pushed toward one corner, and seal bag squeezing out as much air as
possible. Cut the corner off of the bottom of the bag and pipe the sour
cream in concentric circles on top of the bean dip. Start with a small circle
in the middle and make bigger circles around it until you reach the edge
of the bowl. Take a knife, start in the center, and drag it out toward the
edge of the bowl across the sour cream and repeat to make the web. Place
a plastic spider in the center for decoration.
4. Serve with sliced cucumbers and sliced peppers for dipping

If you have any questions about what foods are best during orthodontic treatment, feel free to ask during your next visit!

Hello Good Eating Habits, Bye Plaque!

Eating healthy is important for your entire body, including your teeth. You’ve heard over and over about the basics of maintain good oral hygiene: brush twice a day, floss daily, visit your dentist twice a year and stay on top of orthodontic appointments. However, in between all of that an important way to keep your mouth healthy you must get foods that help main oral health.

We always advise that patients do not eat hard foods, including nuts, ice, crisp taco shells, whole apples and carrots, corn on the cob because these foods can cause breakage of the brackets and wires. However, we also encourage minimizing the amount of sugar in your diet. We don't suggest cutting down on sugar because it harms your appliance, but because it harm your teeth.

When you eat foods that are not good for your teeth, like sugary foods, you are aiding the production of bacteria formally known as plaque. Plaque is a soft, sticky film that builds up on your teeth and contains millions of bacteria. The bacteria in plaque causes tooth decay and gum disease if they are not removed regularly through brushing and flossing.

Here's what you should include in your diet:
  • Eating fiber-rich fruits and vegetables:
  • Eating dairy products (ie; cheese, milk, yogurt)
  • Drinking black and green tea
  • Drinking water
  • Eating non-tough meats (such as soft-cooked chicken, turkey, meatballs, lunch meats)
  • Eating seafood (including tuna, salmon, cod and crab cakes)
  • Eating treats such as pudding, applesauce, bananas, smoothies, fruit juices, jello and ice cream
  • Eating grains including noodles, pasta and soft-cooked rice

Remember everything that goes into your mouth has an effect on your teeth, just make sure it is a positive effect.

Shorter Treatment, Long-lasting Smile

Did you know Research has shown that tooth movement is accelerated by up to 50%, potentially shortening conventional orthodontic treatment time by several appointments?

On average, traditional braces can take up to two years or more to straighten the teeth, a time that is filled with periodic orthodontic visits at Hinesly Orthodontics. What would you say if we could cut that time in half!? Well we can, with AcceleDent.

Shorter treatment times with AcceleDent

AcceleDent is changing the way orthodontic patients achieve a straighter smile. This revolutionary technology makes it possible to shorten treatment time by up to 50 percent, compared to traditional braces without AcceleDent.

AcceleDent is a daily-use device that includes a fitted mouthpiece and an activator. This activator delivers gentle, pain-free pulses that encourage your teeth to move more quickly in the direction of your orthodontic device. When used for 20 minutes each day as prescribed by our office, AcceleDent can cut a two-year treatment in half! Of course, any daily commitment requires convenience and portability. AcceleDent was designed for versatility, with a lightweight, compact design and a convenient storage case. The device easily charges via its USB port, which also doubles as a computer connection to track your history of use.

AcceleDent review according to AcceleDent.com
"AcceleDent significantly shortened my braces treatment duration, reducing the brace alignment as well as refinement periods by half. I would recommend this to anyone!"

Is AcceleDent right for you?

You may be a candidate for AcceleDent if you are undergoing or preparing to undergo orthodontic treatment and are interested in a shorter treatment time. AcceleDent is available at Hinesly Orthodontics.  We are using AcceleDent for Invisalign patients as well.  Normally we instruct patients to change the aligners every two weeks.  With AcceleDent patients are changing their aligners every week, therefore further shortening their treatment time.  Please ask if you are a candidate for AcceleDent, you will enjoy the results.
